AMMAN — Since the activation of the traffic point system, 122 driving licences have been confiscated or suspended, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) announced on Tuesday.

The updated system was developed to improve traffic conditions and deter dangerous driving, especially among repeat offenders, a PSD statement said.

The system stipulates that the driving licence will be suspended for 60 days if the recorded points exceed 16 but are less than 20 points, for a period of 90 days if points exceed 20 but do not exceed 24, for a period of 120 days if points exceed 24 but do not exceed 28, and for a period of 180 days if drivers accumulate over 28 points. Points will reset each calendar year unless the total points acquired exceed the threshold requiring the suspension of the driving licence.

The directorate explained that the system allows those who have 8 to 15 points to register for an optional course at the traffic institute once a year, with the possibility of reducing 8 points from their record upon completion of the course.

The PSD's Jordan Traffic Institute has held 46 courses in various governorates since the beginning of the year, with the participation of 390 drivers.

The directorate urged drivers who have accumulated 8 to 15 points and wish to enroll in the courses to contact the institute via SMS or WhatsApp message at 0770991751.

The directorate called on drivers to obey traffic rules and promote a culture of safety on the roads for the benefit of themselves and other drivers.
