AMMAN — The Cassation Court upheld a December Criminal Court ruling, sentencing two men to prison terms ranging from eight to six years after convicting them of attempting to murder a man in February of last year.
The Criminal Court declared the defendants guilty of stabbing the victim in the back with a knife on February 9 following “a heated argument”.
One of the defendants received an eight-year sentence, while the second received six years and four months.
Court papers said the defendants met the victim in the street to discuss some financial matters when “a heated argument” ensued.
“The argument turned into a scuffle and one of the defendants waived a knife, while the second pinned the victim to the ground,” court papers said.
The defendant with the knife “stabbed the victim once in the back then the two kicked him repeatedly with their feet on different parts of his body,” court documents added.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the assault after undergoing surgery to his back at a nearby hospital, the court papers added.
However, the attending physicians at the hospital determined that the injuries were life-threatening and he survived due to medical interference.
The defendants contested the Criminal Court’s ruling arguing that the “prosecution failed to provide solid evidence to convict him with the charges”.
The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.
The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendants were given the appropriate punishment.
The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi and Mohammad Khashashneh.
