AMMAN — Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of an individual in connection with a hit-and-run case from 23 years ago that resulted in the death of a man in Irbid.
The victim was struck by an unknown vehicle while walking in the street and was rushed to hospital where he died the same day, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“We received new information a few weeks ago regarding a hit-and-run accident that occurred in 2000 in Irbid,” Sartawi said.
A special investigation team was tasked with following up on the new information and they reviewed old Licence Department records, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
“The investigation team managed to pinpoint the vehicle and the driver behind the wheel,” according to Sartawi.
Upon summoning the suspect, the police official added, “he reportedly confessed to driving the vehicle along with his relative on the day of the accident”.
“The suspect admitted to being the driver and that he agreed with his relative not to report the accident,” the police official added.
The suspect was referred to the prosecution office for further questioning and indictment, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.
