5G subscriptions surge by 64% in Q2 2024 - TRC

Telecommunications Regulatory Commission says on Tuesday that Fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology subscriptions in Jordan saw a 64 per cent increase in the second quarter of 2024 compared with the first quarter (JT file)

AMMAN — Fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology subscriptions in Jordan saw a 64 per cent increase in the second quarter of 2024 compared with the first quarter, according to a report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) on Tuesday.

The report noted that the number of 5G subscriptions rose to 51,491 in the second quarter, up from 31,334 in the first quarter of the year. Fixed broadband internet subscriptions reached 793,000, with a household penetration rate of 32.9 per cent, slightly down from 798,000 subscriptions and a 33.3 per cent penetration rate in the first quarter.

In terms of broadband technology, 18 per cent of subscriptions utilised FBWA technology, while xDSL technology accounted for 11 per cent. 

Fibre optic technology continued to lead, making up 70 per cent of subscriptions, reaching 556,000 by the second quarter compared with 548,000 in the first quarter.

The report also highlighted data trends, showing that the volume of data consumed through fixed broadband services reached approximately 1.289 billion gigabytes in the second quarter, compared with 1.249 billion gigabytes in the first quarter. 

Average monthly data usage per subscription grew by 4 per cent to 542 gigabytes, up from 521 gigabytes in the previous quarter.

Total mobile broadband subscriptions reached 7.908 million by the end of the second quarter, with prepaid subscriptions comprising 71 per cent and postpaid making up 29 per cent. 

Additionally, mobile phone subscriptions reached a penetration rate of 68.1 per cent of the population, and 104.7 per cent for individuals over 15. 

A total of 290 million text messages were sent by the end of the second quarter, the report said.
