AMMAN — The US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministry of Local Administration (MoLA), the Governorate of Ajloun and Greater Ajloun Municipality on Tuesday commemorated the completion of street naming and building numbering in Ajloun’s city centre.

The ceremony was attended by MoLA Secretary General Basem Tarawneh, Mayor of Greater Ajloun Municipality Hasan Al Zghoul, Deputy Governor of Ajloun Mohammed Abu Rumman and USAID Deputy Mission Director Ralph Koehring, according to a USAID statement.

Street naming and building numbering facilitate commerce and investment, support timely delivery of public and emergency services and help visitors and tourists navigate the city, the statement said.

In addition to ongoing work to instal street signs and building numbers in the remaining areas of the Greater Ajloun Municipality, USAID and MoLA are partnering to instal street signs and building numbers in Jerash and Mafraq, and are developing maps to demarcate street names and building numbers in all 100 of Jordan’s municipalities, according to the statement.

“Today is a proud day in Ajloun, serving as an example of USAID’s, the Ministry of Local Administration’s, and our shared commitment to improving services to Jordan’s communities,” Zghoul was quoted in the statement as saying.

“USAID and MoLA’s strategic relationship in supporting local administrations is a long-term and lasting one. So, I would like to express our commitment and collaboration to ensure the sustainability of such a strong relationship, which will, as a result, enhance and ensure a capable local governance system in Jordan,” said Tarawneh in the statement.

Koehring added: “Systematic street naming and building numbering encourage economic growth and efficient service delivery for the people of Ajloun.”

The street naming and numbering initiative is one of many that USAID, the Ministry of Local Administration, and municipalities are jointly undertaking to improve the delivery of local services, attract local investment and facilitate cooperation between the government and local communities, the statement said.

The US government, through USAID, has provided foreign assistance from the American people to Jordan for nearly 70 years, according to the statement.
