AMMAN — The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal in Aqaba will begin operations at the end of February, according to Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) CEO Ghassan Ghanem.
In an Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) statement sent to The Jordan Time on Monday, Ghanem said the ADC will receive the project from the contractor at the end of this month and operate it according to international standards.
The terminal can receive large oil vessels with storage capacities of up to 25,000 tonnes and has an unloading capacity of 300 metres per hour, he added.
The JD17 million terminal project, Ghanem said, aims at increasing the efficiency of importing LPG.
The government sought to establish terminals in Aqaba for LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to secure supplies of gas resources after the disruption in Egyptian natural gas imports, which were used to generate around 80 per cent of the Kingdom’s electricity needs, according to the ASEZA statement.
Ghanem said the LNG terminal will start operating by the end of May.
LNG from the terminal will be pumped through the Arab Gas Pipeline to be distributed to power stations to reduce generation costs, since these stations are currently using more expensive heavy fuel, the statement said.
