AMMAN — The Aqaba Marine Reserve successfully passed the first phase of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Green List assessment.

This recognition affirms that the Aqaba Marine Reserve is among the world’s best-managed and environmentally sustainable protected areas, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The evaluation process involved over 50 assessment criteria, including indicators of good governance, effective management and conservation programme quality.

The achievement is a result of collaborative efforts with partners such as the Ministry of Environment, the European Union and UNDP Jordan.

The next stage includes a field evaluation conducted by the IUCN in conjunction with the reserve team, civil society and relevant institutions.

The IUCN Green List programme aims to promote reserves and establish a standard for effective and equitable management.
