AMMAN — Energy Minister Hala Zawati and Awqaf Minister Mohammad Khalaileh on Monday inaugurated a project to provide Aqaba’s 35 mosques with solar cell systems.
The project is implemented by Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) in cooperation with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) with a subsidy of 50 per cent, according to an Energy Ministry statement.
Zawati said that the project will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 1,647 equivalent tonnes of CO2.
For his part, Khalaileh said that the electricity bill of mosques is the biggest burden on the ministry, noting that providing Aqaba mosques with renewable energy sources annually is expected to save some JD500,000.
