Autumn weather to prevail this week — JMD

AMMAN — Autumnal weather with a chance of light rainfall is expected to prevail this week, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD). 

On Monday, temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 25°C during the day and a low of 15°C at night. Some parts of the northern and central regions are forecast to see “light and intermittent showers of rain” along with moderate north-westerly winds, the JMD said in its weather forecast.

Tuesday will see a high of 27°C during the day and a low of 15°C at night with the possibility of light rain in parts of Jordan’s south-western regions, it added.

On Wednesday, Arabia Weather, a private weather company, forecast temperatures to range between a high of 24°C and a low of 17°C with a “chance for rain showers and thunderstorms”.  Its forecast also predicts “mostly clear” weather on Thursday, with temperatures ranging between a high of 24°C and a low of 16°C. 

The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced its preparation for the anticipated rainfall, noting that it has taken the necessary measures to ensure the readiness of the capital’s drainage system. It also advised the public to dial 102 or 117180 in case of any weather-related emergencies during the week.

Last Thursday marked the first instance of rainfall this autumn, which mostly affected the southern and eastern regions of the Kingdom at night, and continued during the day on Friday, according to Arabia Weather. 

President of the Jordanian Farmers Union Mahmoud Oran noted that Jordan’s farmers remain apprehensive of the weather this season. 

“Apart from the fact that the rainfall has affected a limited number of random areas across Jordan, its volume was very low,” he told The Jordan Times, calling for efforts to enhance Jordan’s water harvesting measures for an optimal use of the season’s rainfall. 

Oran also noted that although these weather changes are the result of natural phenomena, the relevant entities must “enhance scientific research and provide local framers with guidance” on how to adapt to the changes in climate, which have caused the sector to suffer from “hard hits”.

According to the JMD, the total rainfall during autumn, which makes up 11 per cent of Jordan’s annual rain average, is expected to decrease by 30 per cent.
