AMMAN — Canada’s Governor General David Johnston and his wife arrived in Amman on Saturday on his first official visit to the Kingdom.
Johnston is scheduled to meet with His Majesty King Abdullah to discuss ways to enhance Jordanian-Canadian cooperation, in addition to the latest regional and international developments, according to a Royal Court statement.
Also on Saturday, Johnston and his wife visited Mount Nebo in Madaba, 30km southwest of Amman, where he toured different locations, including the Memorial Church of Moses.
He expressed his admiration of the historical site, which is one of five religious locations the Vatican has accredited for Christian pilgrimage, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Earlier this month, the Moses Memorial on Mount Nebo, where Moses is believed to have been shown the Holy Land, according to Christian and Jewish traditions, was inaugurated after almost 10 years of renovations.
Mount Nebo, around 817 metres above sea level, was the place Moses saw the “Promised Land”, according to the Hebrew Bible’s Book of Deuteronomy.
As narrated by the Christian and Jewish holy books, Moses did not enter the land and died on the Dead Sea’s eastern shore in Moab.
