Case against imam dismissed ‘for lack of evidence’

AMMAN — The State Security Court (SSC) threw out on Sunday a case against Adal Awad, a Muslim Brotherhood member and east Amman imam for “lack of evidence”, according to judicial and legal sources.

Authorities had arrested Awad in September and charged him with “undermining the state” for comments allegedly made during a Friday sermon in late August deemed insulting to “the army and the regime”.

In its decision, the court cited a lack of evidence proving that the disparaging comments were made and that Awad’s sermon had insulted “any state agency or body”, according to Abdul Qader Khatib, the cleric’s defence attorney.

Awad had been released on bail in mid-September, and will not face any further charges, judicial sources said.

He was one of 15 Muslim Brotherhood activists and officials facing charges at the SSC.

The Brotherhood cleric was one of 30 imams suspended by the Ministry of Awqaf this year for “politicising the pulpit”.
