AMMAN — Interior Minister Mazen Faraya on Tuesday announced the establishment of a civil defence centre specialised in risk management to serve the southern Aqaba region.

The centre will include a joint operations centre to maintain coordination between Aqaba-based industrial companies and the civil defence to facilitate the response to emergency situations in factories operating in the region, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Faraya, during a meeting in Aqaba with officials from industrial companies operating in the port city, noted that the centre will be dedicated to addressing potential accidents in Aqaba's southern industrial zone, adding that the centre will have responders specialised in hazardous materials who will also supervise contingency plans in industrial facilities.

A tender related to the establishment of the centre has been floated, he said.

The centre would be built on an area of 3,900 square metres, at an estimated cost of JD5 million, a donation from the region's industrial companies, the minister noted, highlighting that coordination is underway with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) to establish the centre.
