Community fridges provide essential support as winter approaches — stakeholders

AMMAN — As colder weather approaches, community fridges are stepping up to provide vital support for local communities, according to stakeholders.
Community fridges across the country are ramping up operations, having become essential resources for many facing food insecurity since the pandemic.
“Such initiatives serve as lifelines for countless families. Community fridges, often operated by volunteers and supported by donations, offer free food to anyone in need, no questions asked and no names required,” said Baraa Ahmad, a Jordanian who launched a community fridge initiative in 2024.
Ahmad told The Jordan Times that she currently has three fridges in operation at shared locations: one outside a grocery store in a low-income neighbourhood, one at an outlet store providing only free water and drinks, and another located in Downtown Amman.
Alongside Ahmad, five volunteers work tirelessly to keep the fridges stocked with fresh produce, canned goods, and water.
Sarah Samir, one of Ahmad's volunteers, highlighted the increased demand during the winter season.
“With heating costs rising, people are forced to make tough choices. Often, the decision comes down to heating their homes or buying food,” she said.
Fadwa Shadi, a Jordanian philanthropist in her mid-50s said that food donations come from local businesses, residents, and even children, adding that providing families in need with freshly cooked meals or canned food does not necessarily require community fridges.
Shadi noted that many leave cash at well-known restaurants and grocery stores so that those in need can cover meals or essentials they might otherwise be unable to afford.
One mother, a regular contributor to one of the community fridges who wished to remain anonymous, said: “These fridges are a blessing for all of us,” emphasising that their impact extends beyond physical sustenance and fosters a spirit of community.
Several community fridges, including “Thalajat Al Khair,” “Barakeh,” and “Tadamun,” are making a significant difference in the lives of those they serve.
