Education minister directs admission of physically challenged student

AMMAN — Minister of Education and Higher Education Walid Maani on Friday directed the Department of Special Education to enrol a physically impaired student in one of the public schools that has the capacity of receiving students with disabilities.

Sami Salaytah, the ministry’s secretary general, said that the ministry has contacted the student’s mother who complained through social media that the schools she had visited rejected her first-grade son due to his physical disability.

The child lacks the accessibility and suitable facilities to accommodate his condition, according to his mother, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ministry contacted her to facilitate the child’s admission to a suitable school as of the beginning of the second semester of the academic year 2018/2019, Salaytah added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Development on Saturday ratified the fitting and preparation of two classrooms in Irbid’s Kourah district, designated for children with moderate intellectual disabilities.

The new facilities will be incorporated into the “Al Qalb Al Raheem” (“Merciful Heart” in English) Association for the care of orphans and disabled children, funded by a local community grant.

The teaching of two classes encompassing 16 impaired students, ranging from 5-16 years old, will start during the next semester, Maysoun Meqdadi, the association’s head said.
