FAO workshop follows up on Green Climate Fund Project for Jordan

AMMAN — A “Validation Workshop” focusing on the effects of climate change in Jordan took place in Amman on Tuesday, as a follow-up to the “Brain Storming Session” held in early August, a UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) statement said.

The struggle to adapt to the effects of climate change has been explored through a series of dialogues conducted by the FAO in Jordan over the recent months. 

The ministries of environment, agriculture, water and irrigation, and various UN agencies departments, among other stakeholders, have been the key players in this initiative that sought to formulate a Green Climate Fund Project for Jordan, the statement added.

According to Nafis Khan, head of programmes and operations at the FAO, the workshop was a follow-up event aimed at finalising thematic areas of intervention but, more importantly, at deciding the geographic location within Jordan where project activities will be implemented. 

He emphasised the “utmost importance” of this exercise and commended the collaboration received from the Jordanian government. 

Khan also voiced FAO’s full support to the government in facilitating the formulation of a Green Climate Fund project. A number of experts from the FAO regional office in Cairo as well as Amman attended the workshop, according to the statement. 

For Nasredin Hag Elamin, Representative of the FAO in Jordan, holding such a workshop was necessary due to the input of experts from localities in the potential areas of intervention. This helped in developing appropriate interventions which account for the challenges that might arise on the ground, such as the kind of soil, the topography of the area, or the socioeconomic status of residents.

He stressed that the selection process would take many factors into account, among which the economic and social vulnerability of the targeted communities, as well as the possibility for sustaining the project, the statement concluded.
