AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Wednesday met with the Speaker of the Senate of Canada, George Furey, to discuss ways to serve the common interests of both countries and to address regional issues.

Fayez emphasised the deep-rooted and historical relations between Jordan and Canada, which are based on mutual respect and serving common causes.

He also highlighted the economic difficulties that Jordan is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, regional instability, the Russo-Ukrainian war, and hosting more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees, noting that these pressures have impacted vital sectors and infrastructure in the country.

Fayez also highlighted Jordan's efforts for political, economic and administrative reforms. Commending Canada’s support for the Kingdom, especially in education and renewable energy, he called for increasing Canadian investments and trade exchange, and for facilitating the work of Jordanians in the Canadian labour market.

Furey praised Jordan's efforts to bring peace and security to the region, highlighted Jordan's significant role in various regional issues and expressed support for the King's efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.
