AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi  on Wednesday briefed Japan's Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on the details of the Arab effort to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria and resolve its humanitarian, security and political consequences.

During a phone call, Safadi stressed the importance of the Arab path developed after the Jeddah and Amman meetings and the Arab League special session, noting that the path is intended to contribute to solving the crisis in accordance with a step-by-step methodology, in line with UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The final statement issued by the countries that participated in the Amman meeting has provided a roadmap for gradual progress toward a comprehensive solution to the crisis, which requires great, collective efforts and practical steps, while also focusing on the crisis’ humanitarian aspects to alleviate the burden on the Syrian people and those in the region, Safadi said.

The foreign minister stressed the importance of focusing initially on humanitarian aspects to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, and to progressively address security and political aspects.

The Japanese minister stressed that his country supports efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria as per the relevant UN resolutions, referring to his country's humanitarian assistance within the early recovery mechanism provided by UN Security Council resolutions.

The two ministers also discussed the outcomes of His Majesty King Abdullah's visit to Japan in April.

They also noted the importance of His Majesty's talks with Japanese officials and the impact of their implementation on the development of strategic partnership relations between the two countries.

The two confirmed the need to implement the results of the third round of the strategic dialogue, which they co-chaired in Tokyo in March.

Safadi reiterated the Kingdom's appreciation for the "strong and friendly relations" between Jordan and Japan, and praised Japan's support for Jordan and its assistance in addressing the consequences of regional crises.

For his part, Hayashi stressed that his country attaches great importance to its partnership with the Kingdom and its key role in promoting security and stability in the region.

The two ministers agreed to continue their consultations during a visit by Hayashi to the Kingdom to be set later.
