FM continues calls with counterparts, int’l officials over Amman meeting on Syria

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday continued his phone calls with various foreign ministers as well as regional and international officials to update them on the outcomes of the Amman-hosted meeting, according to a ministry statement.

The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Egypt, along with the Syrian foreign minister, as part of joint efforts to launch a leading Arab role in solving the Syrian crisis.

Safadi spoke with the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration of Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar, and Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, briefing them on the details of the meeting, which ended with the announcement of the “Amman Communiqué ”. The statement included agreements on several steps to gradually move towards solutions to the humanitarian, security and political repercussions of the crisis.

Safadi also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, informing them of the meeting, which represents the first of its kind between Arab countries and Syria since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, and formed the basis for a new political path in the efforts to solve the crisis with a leading Arab role.

In his conversations with his counterparts, Safadi emphasised that the Amman meeting represented a positive start to a process aimed at addressing all the ramifications of the crisis and reaching a political solution, in accordance with the step-by-step methodology and the Security Council Resolution 2254, and building on Arab initiatives, effort and contacts to resolve the crisis.
