AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday summoned the Israeli ambassador in Amman to convey a strongly worded protest message pertaining to the detention of two Jordanians in Israel and the manner in which the Israeli authorities handled the incident and dealt with the two detainees, a ministry statement said.

The ministry stressed the need to allow the Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv to visit the two nationals as soon as possible, to assess their situation and to provide the necessary support for them in accordance with relevant international laws.

The ministry called on Israel to respect all their legal and human rights, and to take proper procedures that are consistent with international human rights treaties and standards, reminding Israeli authorities to bear responsibility for their safety.

The ministry urged the ambassador to deliver an urgent message to his authorities for the release of both detainees.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Daifallah Fayez said that the ministry will continue to follow up on the developments in this regard, in coordination with the embassy in Tel Aviv to provide the necessary legal and humanitarian support to Jordanians, underlining that the embassy in Tel Aviv is in constant contact with the appointed lawyer who met the Jordanian detainees on Monday.

The ministry spokesperson also explained that the ministry informed the Israeli ambassador of its rejection and condemnation of the ongoing violations, assaults and provocations carried out by the Israeli forces at Al Aqsa Mosque.

Jordan also condemned restricting Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department’s staff and worshippers, and demanded stopping such illegal practices immediately.

Fayez said that the ministry confirmed to the Israeli ambassador its rejection to the violations of the rights of the people of the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, reiterating that their forced displacement is an illegal and inhumane act that violates international law and international humanitarian law.
