AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has changed the schedule of its employees who work outdoors due to the exceptionally hot weather in the Kingdom, a GAM official said on Tuesday.

The municipal official, who asked to remain unnamed, said the GAM will not allow its employees to work outside between 12 noon and 4pm, when the weather is hottest.

“We rescheduled their programme in accordance with the weather out of our concern for their health,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.

Jordan has experienced high temperatures since a hot air mass accompanied by a seasonal depression originating from the Indian subcontinent started affecting the Kingdom on Friday.

Temperatures peaked on Monday and reached 37ºC in east Amman on Tuesday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department.

GAM has started spraying water on the capital’s street in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic like downtown Amman and Medina Munawara Street, the municipal official said.

Temperatures are expected to drop gradually from Wednesday, but the GAM official said the municipality’s measures would be in place until Friday.
