Hot air mass settles in; Friday to peak with above average temperatures

AMMAN — The dry hot air mass from Africa started impacting the Kingdom on Wednesday, raising temperatures to 5-7°C above their seasonal average for this time of year, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

Thursday will witness a further slight increase of temperatures, according to a JMD statement.

Hot weather conditions will prevail in most parts of the Kingdom, especially the intense heat in the Jordan Valley and Aqaba, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The hot weather conditions will continue through Friday as mercury levels are forecast to rise further, with scattered high clouds, the statement said.

The JMD warned people against direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours from noon to 3pm and called on the public to stay indoors in the meantime.

Temperatures in Amman on Thursday will range between a high of 37°C during the day and a low of 25°C during the night, while Aqaba will see mercury levels ranging between 43°C and 30°C, according to the JMD website.

On Friday, the peak of the heat wave, temperatures in the capital are forecast to rise to 39°C during the day in Amman and hilly areas, dropping to 23°C during the night. Aqaba will see hotter conditions with 45°C in the day and 27°C during the night, the website forecasted.

The impact of the hot air mass will start subsiding on Saturday, with temperatures expected to drop but remain relatively hot in mountainous areas and plains and hot in other regions, as anticipated by the JMD.
