IEC inaugurates strategy for women empowerment in elections

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday launched the women's empowerment framework  "Strategy for Women's Empowerment in Elections and Political Parties 2024-2026".

Addressing a gathering of experts, women's advocates and stakeholders, Chairman of the board of commissioners of the IEC Musa Maaytah commended the Kingdom's progress in promoting women's participation in the political process, driven by the presence of political parties. 

The upcoming parliamentary elections are the first step in the political modernisation project, he said. 

Maaytah reiterated the commission's commitment to administering the elections fairly and will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the electoral process. 

The  IEC is not a guardian of the parties but monitors the implementation of the law, he said, adding, "The commission is neither a court nor a security centre, but a constitutional institution that carries out its duties according to the law, and that political parties must learn to practice democracy internally."

German Ambassador to Jordan Bertram von Moltke praised Jordan's recent constitutional amendments as a sign of Royal interest in political modernisation. 

He said the upcoming elections are fundamental to increasing the political participation of Jordanian women.

Women's representation in political parties is a fundamental principle that will be translated into real policies and support the legal framework for women's participation in parties and elections, the diplomat added.
