AMMAN – The Independent Election Commission (IEC) is currently working on registering voters based on their residency area to ease up the voting process in the upcoming Parliamentary elections, according to its spokesperson.
“We had several complaints from people who were registered based on where their family was residing and they had to vote based on that, not where they were residing,” the IEC Spokesperson Jihad Momani said on Thursday.
Momani told The Jordan Times that the IEC decided to “take these comments into consideration and to revise all the voters’ civil registration’s lists in terms of residency to ensure that they vote based on the area they live in,” Momani explained.
The IEC spokesperson added that the aim “is to ensure that voters will be able to vote in the nearest polling station to their residency”.
The IEC had earlier said that elections for the 19th Parliament will be held on November 10. The Kingdom is divided into 23 constituencies.
The IEC is scheduled to announce the names of heads and members of the committees along with polling and counting centres on its website, www.iec.jo, the commission’s website said.
A Royal Decree was issued recently directing the concerned agencies to hold parliamentary elections in accordance with the provisions of law.
The IEC had announced recently that accreditation for international agencies to monitor the November elections will be open between August 16 and October 20.
Interested agencies can apply through the commission's website, the IEC said on its website.
The IEC also said that local and foreign journalists, interested in covering the elections can apply through its website between August 5 and October 31, as long as they are 18 years old in addition to working for a media outlet that is accredited in the Kingdom.
