AMMAN — Japan announced a $2 million grant to UNICEF to support education, youth training and water, sanitation and hygiene interventions that target the most vulnerable children, youth and families in Jordan, a UNICEF statement said.
The funding, approved on February 1 as part of Japan’s Supplementary Budget for 2017, was announced on Wednesday by Japanese Ambassador Hidenao Yanagi and UNICEF Representative Robert Jenkins.
The new contribution will directly benefit over 20,000 vulnerable individuals through social cohesion activities, volunteering opportunities, and the regular maintenance of water infrastructure in refugee camps, according to the statement. Japan contributed a total of $13.6 million to UNICEF Jordan since the beginning of 2016, helping to reach thousands of the most vulnerable children with water, sanitation, health, protection and education services, the statement concluded.
