AMMAN — Japan on Wednesday delivered vehicles and security equipment to the headquarters of Syrian Refugees Affairs Directorate (SRAD), an embassy statement said. In 2016, Japan extended to the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) a total grant of $1.495 million to finance the project titled “Improving Safety and Security for Syrian Refugees at the Refugee Camps in Jordan”.
The handover ceremony was attended by Shuichi Sakurai, ambassador of Japan, Brigadier Engineer Jihad Ghalib Mattar, general director of SRAD, and Bana Kaloti, director and representative of UNOPS in Amman, the statement said.
The project seeks to prevent the smuggling of explosives to the camps through the provision of essential vehicles and security equipment, the statement added. “Japan has acknowledged that security is one of top priorities in managing refugee camps; because assistance for the refugees, who are living in severe condition, can be provided only under a secure and safe environment,” Sakurai was quoted in the statement as saying.
In 2016, Japan extended approximately $59 million to international organisations operating in Jordan, according to the statement.
