JICA launches project to update ASEZ Master Plan

AMMAN — Aqaba witnessed the official kick-off of the project “Updating ASEZ Master Plan”, which is supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to a statement from the agency.

This project comes as a part of the outputs of Aqaba Executive Strategic Plan, and aims to conduct a comprehensive review and update the 2001-2020 ASEZ Master Plan reflecting vision for ASEZ and ADC in organising and developing strategy, land use, infrastructure and services in line with the expected changes in the next 20 year, JICA said in a previous statement.

In his opening remarks, Nayef Bakheet, ASEZA chief commissioner, thanked JICA for supporting the project, which reflect the “deep rooted” relations between Jordan and Japan, the statement said. 

Bakheet emphasised that the project is important for Aqaba for the next 20 years, and it will impact the national economy positively.

Hussein Safadi, CEO of Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), welcomed a Japanese team to Aqaba and pledged to provide all support to them.

Kawatani Nobuhiro, senior representative at JICA Jordan Office, highlighted that despite Aqaba’s limited area, it plays a crucial role in imports and exports not only for Jordan but also the region, namely for Iraq, the GCC countries and the Palestinians. 

He added that Aqaba is also a major tourism destination, especially with the large number of hotel rooms added every year, its modern infrastructure and the fact that it is part of Jordan’s Golden Triangle. 

“Aqaba also houses one of Jordan’s largest energy plants, the floating gas terminal, and will also be vital for Jordan’s future water security once the National Water Conveyor Project is constructed and operated. With all these potential, JICA is very thrilled to be a part of the formulation of the new master plan,” he added.

He said JICA expects that this will lead to future investment, where JICA can further cooperate through its financial assistance and private sector investment finance, including smart city. 

He highlighted Aqaba’s great potential in complementing a mosaic of smart cities and modern urban planning concepts popping up in the region, and aiming ultimately to turn this part of the world as hub for trade, logistics, tourism and most importantly peace.
