Jordan exerting all efforts to achieve regional peace, welfare — Safadi

AMMAN — Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday said that achieving regional security and stability necessitates a holistic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict according to a two-state formula that guarantees the establishment of a Palestinian state within the pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital. 

During the Mediterranean Dialogues Forum, organised by Italy's ministry of foreign affairs in cooperation with the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, Safadi affirmed that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, represents a model of moderation that exerts all its efforts to achieve regional peace and welfare.

He also pointed out that terrorism is a common enemy that should be defeated by resolving the tension and deprivation that terrorists exploit to promote their deviated ideologies.

Safadi stressed the need for the reconstruction of Iraq after the defeat of the Daesh terrorist group in its territories.

He highlighted the significance of a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves its territorial unity. 

Safadi stressed the necessity of the continuation of support for Syrian refugees by the international community, noting that Jordan is committed to doing everything in its power to fulfill the needs of the 1.3 million Syrians on its land and guarantee their dignity, in spite of the difficult economic conditions it is facing.

The forum, attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella and a number of foreign ministers, began with a keynote speech by Iraqi President Barham Saleh.

On the sidelines of the summit, Safadi met with his Italian counterpart Enzo Moavero Milanesi, where the two ministers reviewed needed steps to activate and develop bilateral cooperation.

They affirmed the significance of the upcoming summit, scheduled to be held in Amman in the beginning of next year, during which His Majesty King Abdullah and Mattarella will discuss enhancing ties between the two countries.

Safadi also met with Palestinian Foreign Minister Reyadh Maliki, and discussed developments on the Palestinian cause, where both ministers stressed the need for continued coordination of efforts leading to the resolve of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on a two-state solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people.

Also on the sidelines of the event, Safadi discussed with UK’s Minister of State for the Middle East Alistair Burt bilateral ties and means of enhancing them, as well as the latest regional developments, peace processes and efforts to guarantee the success of the London summit, which will be held in February to support the Kingdom’s economy.

Bilateral relations and developments in the Syrian fronts were also discussed during Safadi’s meeting with Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Önal.

Mediterranean Dialogues was launched in 2015 through an initiative by Italy’s then-foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni, to serve as a platform for dialogue on issues of mutual interest for Mediterranean countries. 

King Abdullah was the keynote speaker at the first summit of the high-level forum.
