Jordan hospitals registered 72,168 births in 2016 — SIGI

AMMAN — The number of births registered in hospitals across Jordan during 2016 was 72,168, of which 19,670 were caesarean deliveries representing 27.2 per cent of the total, according to a Sisterhood Is Global Institute (SIGI) statement. Private hospital deliveries amounted to 58,019 births representing 29.3 per cent of the cases, 29,699 of which were males and 28,320 were females.
SIGI added that 34.3 per cent of the deliveries took place outside of hospitals, usually in healthcare centres, refugee camps, or by certified midwives in houses. One in every three deliveries occurred outside of hospitals, SIGI noted. The statement added that the number of certified midwives in 2016 was 2,209.
