Jordan marks International Literacy Day

AMMAN — Jordan will mark International Literacy Day on Monday along with other world countries.
The day, the theme of which is “Literacy and Sustainable Development” this year, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of eradicating illiteracy throughout the world.
In the 2013-2014 academic year, the Ministry of Education opened 479 adult education centres to combat illiteracy, 453 of them for women with 5,449 attendees, and 26 for men with 314 attendees, according to Education Ministry figures.
In Jordan, the illiteracy rate dropped from 19.5 per cent in 1990 to 6.8 per cent in 2013, he said.
