Jordan renews support for efforts to rebuild Libya

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday expressed Jordan’s full support for the Libyan people in achieving its aspirations and hopes to build Libya, and enhancing the country’s security and stability.

At a meeting with Libya’s interim Prime Minister Abdullah Al Thinni at Al Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to ensure Libya’s sovereignty and empower its civil and military institutions, and boost their capabilities in this regard, according to a Royal Court statement. 

The meeting — also attended by HRH Prince Ghazi, King’s personal envoy and adviser for religious and cultural affairs, and Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour — tackled endeavours exerted to encourage national dialogue among different components of Libya.

The meeting addressed procedures the Libyan government is carrying out in cooperation with different regional and international powers to combat terrorism in the North African country, the statement added.

For his part, Thinni briefed His Majesty on the latest developments in his country and the efforts the government is exerting to deal with different challenges, especially in facing terrorism and extremism, and enhancing security and stability.

The Libyan official also expressed his appreciation of the Kingdom for its support to the Libyan people, its assistance in confronting current challenges and Jordan’s help to Libya in building the state’s institutions. 

Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Nasser Judeh, King’s Adviser on National Security Affairs and General Intelligence Department Director Gen. Faisal Shobaki, King’s Office Director Jaafar Hassan and King’s Adviser Abdullah Wreikat also attended the meeting.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ensour and Thinni held a meeting that focused on ways to enhance bilateral relations in all fields, and the latest developments in the Libyan arena.

Also on Wednesday, the Monarch received Iraqi Transport Minister Baqir Zubeidi and discussed with him ways to boost bilateral ties, and building on them at all levels, especially in the transport and railway sectors. 

King Abdullah expressed Jordan’s keenness to further develop relations with Iraq and support it to achieve national unity, and enhance its security and stability.

For his part, Zubeidi stressed his country’s keenness to develop bilateral ties with the Kingdom in different fields, and appreciated the Jordanian stance in supporting Iraqis under all circumstances.

Tarawneh, Hassan and Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan Jawad Hadi Abbas also attended the meeting.
