Jordanian-Egyptian workshop discusses ecotourism, natural resource conservation

AMMAN — The Migratory Soaring Birds Project, in collaboration with the Egypt's "Biodiversity Integration in the Tourism Sector” project, on Thursday organised a regional workshop to explore the benefits of a regional roadmap for ecotourism. 

The workshop, which was opened by Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Chief Commissioner Nayef Al Fayez, and featured the participation of the Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, and the Governor of South Sinai Maj. Gen. Khaled Foudah, aims to promote sustainable tourism practices, raise awareness about natural resource conservation, and enhance cooperation between stakeholders in the tourism industry.

Besides ecotourism, the workshop covered topics such as sustainable tourism development, conservation of natural and cultural heritage sites, community engagement, responsible travel practices and economic benefits of ecotourism, Fayez said.

Fouad described the workshop as a "platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration" that would help shape collective strategies and maximise regional ecotourism potential.

UNDP Resident Representative Randa Aboul-Hosn said that the workshop was part of a comprehensive strategy to preserve the natural resources of Aqaba, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Ibrahim Khader, regional director of BirdLife International - Middle East, emphasised how ecotourism can contribute to nature conservation and local livelihoods. He stressed the need to address the challenges faced by the industry and strengthen sustainable practices.
