King, Sisi discuss Mideast peace in Gaza aftermath

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi on Sunday agreed on the need for a swift resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict — backed by a call of action from the international community — and discussed the latest developments in the Middle East. 

The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly meeting in New York, called for bolstering efforts to create the appropriate atmosphere for the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli talks, according to a Royal Court statement.  

They stressed the need for negotiations based on the two-state solution, the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative and the related international resolutions to address final-status issues, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

King Abdullah and Sisi reiterated a call to mobilise international support for the reconstruction of Gaza after the destruction caused by the Israeli aggression on the strip in July and August.

The Monarch cited Jordan’s efforts to help Palestinians in the enclave and provide them with the needed medical and humanitarian support, commending Egypt’s “pivotal” role in bringing a halt to the Israeli offensive. 

Discussions also covered the situation in Syria and means to end the suffering of the Syrian people through a comprehensive political solution.

Regarding Iraq, both leaders underlined the need to support the cohesion of Iraqi society and back the new government’s endeavours to engage all segments of the Iraqi people in the political process. 

The King and Sisi also discussed regional and international efforts to combat growing terrorism and extremism, stressing their support for the international and regional alliances against these phenomena.

On the Libyan issue, the two leaders agreed on the need to protect the unity of Libya and respect the legitimate institutions emanating from the will of the Libyan people, according to the statement.
