King, UNESCO director general discuss advancing cooperation

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah, accompanied by HRH Crown Prince Hussein, on Wednesday met with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay and discussed advancing cooperation between Jordan and UNESCO, especially in safeguarding cultural heritage.
At the meeting, attended by HRH Prince Ghazi, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, the King noted UNESCO’s important role in preserving World Heritage Sites in danger, especially the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Majesty also commended UNESCO’s role in safeguarding heritage sites in Jordan, especially the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For her part, UNESCO Director General Azoulay, who is currently in the Kingdom on her first official visit, highlighted the UN agency’s role around the world, and its cooperation with Jordan, stressing the importance of bolstering this cooperation, the statement said.
Jordan’s Ambassador to France Makram Queisi and the accompanying UNESCO delegation attended the meeting.
