AMMAN — Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a man who allegedly stabbed and critically injured his mother in Amman, official sources said.
The victim, in her late 70s, was stabbed in the stomach with a sharp object while at her home in Jabal Hussein, allegedly by her son, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“The suspect, who is believed to suffer from mental health problems, escaped from the house shortly after the stabbing incident,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
Police immediately formed teams to locate the suspect and he was arrested shortly afterwards, Sartawi added.
The police official added that investigators seized a sharp object that was in the possession of the suspect.
“We believe that the sharp object was the weapon used in the attack against the victim,” the police official said.
The weapon was sent to the criminal lab for further analysis and for DNA traces, according to the police official.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was listed in critical condition, the police official said.
A senior judicial source told The Jordan Times that the Criminal Court’s prosecution office was notified about the stabbing incident.
“The prosecutor will start investigating the incident once the suspect is referred to him by the police,” the senior judicial source said.
The prosecutor is also expected to summon relatives of the victim and the suspect to learn more about the incident, the senior judicial source added.
Police said investigations are ongoing into the incident.
