Man sentenced to over 7 years in jail for complicity in attempted murder

AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to more than seven years in prison after convicting him of complicity in attempted murder in man in March 2017.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of driving the getaway vehicle that transported his friend to the crime scene on March 11.

However, the court decided to reduce the prison term to six years and eight months because the victim dropped charges against the defendant.

The court decided to add an additional year to the prison sentence because the defendant was a repeat offender.

Court papers said the defendant’s friend, who did not appeal his court verdict, asked him to take him to a shop, where the victim would be staying at.

“The defendant’s friend had an old feud and decided to take revenge,” court papers said.

The defendant drove by the shop and the minute they spotted the victim “his friend drew a machinegun and fired several rounds at the victim,” according to court papers.

The victim survived the shooting incident after undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital, the court papers added.

The defendant contested the Criminal Court’s ruling arguing that the “prosecution failed to provide solid evidence to convict him with the charges”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate, and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Bassim Mubeidin, Majid Azab, Yassin Abdullat and Mohammad Khashashneh.
