Monday last day for candidacy withdrawal from local polls — IEC

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday said that Monday is the last day for candidates to withdraw from the governorate and municipal elections’ race, according to an IEC spokesperson.

The elections are slated for March 22, which means that March 7 is the last day for the candidates to submit their withdrawal from the race in writing, IEC spokesperson Mohammad Rawashdeh said.

The IEC official told The Jordan Times that March 7 will also be the last day to receive applications from candidates regarding the representatives they wish to designate for the polling stations.

“The IEC commission began taking applications from the candidates who wish to name their representatives who will be stationed at polling stations to monitor the election process,” Rawashdeh said.

Last week, the IEC announced that 13.3 million ballot papers were printed with security marks for the upcoming elections with three colours: one for the city council presidency seat, one for the city council membership seat and one for the governorate seat.

The number of registered candidates stands at over 4,000, Rawashdeh said.

The candidates will be competing for a total of 1,135 seats.

Some 4,602,135 people, including 2,437,340 women, are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.

There will be 1,845 polling stations that will, for the time being, contain 6,907 ballot boxes. The number could decrease or increase based on future needs. 

The Cabinet has decided to hold governorate and municipal council elections in November. 

The Cabinet also approved the Amman Municipal Council Election Law and electoral appeals for 2021.
