No storm-related deaths at Zaatari — UNHCR

AMMAN — No injuries or major incidents took place in the Zaatari Refugee Camp during the snowstorm, the UNHCR said Sunday.

“In @ZaatariCamp, sun is out & teams have done a great job. No deaths due to storm & now 98% @refugees in prefabs #jo”, Andrew Harper, the agency’s representative to Jordan, tweeted on Sunday.

Harper told The Jordan Times on Saturday that refugees residing in tents were evacuated to trailers before the snowstorm, and community centres were equipped with heaters and other requirements to host new arrivals.

Plans were already in place before the start of the storm to avoid any serious incidents in both Zaatari and Azraq, the two major camps for Syrian refugees in Jordan, he said.

On Saturday evening, Civil Defence Department (CDD) teams at the camp, which is lies some 90km northeast of Amman, extinguished a fire that erupted in three trailers, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Mafraq CDD Director Bashir Momani said no one was injured in the blaze, noting that the cause was an electrical short circuit.

Around 80,000 Syrian refugees reside at the camp.
