AMMAN — The opening ceremony of "Petra: Jordan City of Culture for 2022" was held in Petra on Saturday.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), was attended by Culture Minister Haifa Al Najjar, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Nominating Petra as Jordan's “City of Culture for 2022” is part of efforts towards enhancing effective partnerships to serve the culture sector and empowering Petra's cultural institutions, Najjar said.
PDTRA Chief Commissioner Suleiman Farajat highlighted the status of Petra as one of the Kingdom's tourist attractions and international cultural heritage,
He noted that the “absence of a cultural scene in the district, especially in the last years, pushed the authority to create a cultural edifice to promote a cultural movement in the region”.
