AMMAN — The state-owned National Petroleum Company will implement a JD12-million project to boost gas production from the Risheh gas field to 16.5 million of cubic feet per day by the end of 2018, Ghaleb Maabreh, the company’s chairman, said on Saturday.

Currently, the daily production from thousand the field stands at 10 million cubic feet, he told The Jordan Times.

The company will implement some projects to rehabilitate some wells in the field and it will conduct maintenance on several other wells to boost their production, he said.

Upon the completion of the plan, the field’s contribution to the overall energy needs of Jordan will rise to 3 per cent, according to Maabreh, who said that the company will benefit from studies previously conducted by British Petroleum on the gas field.

He noted that the company decided to implement the project after the government announced the amendment of the gas prices sold by the company to its clients.

According to Maabreh, the company’s production of gas from the field from 1995 to 2017 reached around 217 billion cubic feet, which equals the country’s consumption of gas for two years.

The company drilled 45 wells in the field, 15 of which are operational.

In 2014, British Petroleum ended its gas exploration operation in Jordan after unsatisfactory results of its second well in the country.

The company, which was given an exploration and appraisal period of between three and five years in 2010, informed the government that it would not drill a third well, as the results on the second one were not encouraging.
