Police arrest some individuals as small riot breaks out in Rabieh neighbourhood

AMMAN — Police on Friday night dealt with acts of riots in Amman's Rabieh incited by a group of young men, who set fire to trees outside a house in the neighbourhood.

Rabieh neighbourhood, where the Israeli embassy is located, has been witnessing demonstrations, sometimes all-night, since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7.

The PSD said in a statement that individuals involved in the rioting were arrested; emphasising that such action cannot be tolerated and will be dealt with according to the law. 

Police also said that it is tracking down on those who circulated videos, inciting against security personnel, accusing them of setting fire to a house.

"This accusation is baseless as a group of rioters set fire to trees near a house and in its outer courtyard. Security forces responded appropriately, ensuring that the road was cleared for fire engines to deal with the situation," the PSD said.  

Refuting as "unfounded" the allegations that tear gas canisters caused the fire as "unfounded", the PSD said. "Tear gas canisters are scientifically and practically incapable of starting fires."

The spokesperson also reiterated the commitment of the PSD's personnel to supporting peaceful expression and to ensuring the security of such activities. 

No acts of riots have been reported during the demonstrations in Rabieh except on October 17 following news reports on the Israeli attack on Al Ahli hospital in Gaza.

On that day a group of angry young men tried to storm into the Israeli embassy but prevented by police, the PSD said.
