‘Police investigating death of officer guarding former PM’s house’

AMMAN — Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old police officer who was shot on Tuesday while guarding the residence of Senator Abdullah Ensour, police said on Wednesday. 

“We don’t have anything new to offer regarding the shooting incident and an investigation is ongoing,” Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Meanwhile, an autopsy conducted at Zarqa National Institute of Forensic Medicine by a team of pathologists comprising Mohammad Momani, Rajai Shoha and Mohammad Erteimat, indicated that the victim died of a single bullet wound, a senior medical source said.

“This is all we can reveal at this time because of the sensitivity of the case and the ongoing investigation,” the medical source told The Jordan Times.

Officer Hamzeh Awad was in his police hut when the incident occurred at around 5pm, a senior official source said.

Ensour was the longest-serving prime minister under His Majesty King Abdullah, leading the government from October 2012 to May 2016, before being appointed senator in June.
