Princess Basma inaugurates typography conference in Amman

AMMAN — HRH Princess Basma on Saturday inaugurated the 13th International Typography Conference, which is being held in the Middle East for the first time, at the Applied Sciences University (ASU) in Amman. 

The conference provides an opportunity for academics, designers and students from 15 countries to exchange expertise and ideas in typography, which is centred around designing creative artwork using electronically printed letters and words, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During her address at the launch ceremony for the event, which is being organised by the ASU's Arts and Design College in cooperation with the Lebanese University and the Indian Institute of Technology, Princess Basma highlighted the importance of design and printing as a means "to see the world".

Creativity and design are “effective tools that go beyond languages and distances” in exchanging and transferring information among various nations, she said, reiterating the importance of this art form as a way to express and reflect reality.

The princess also referred to the various challenges the world is facing in the health, environment, economic and development sectors in light of changing educational behaviours and tools and the role of such art in boosting efforts to address such obstacles. 

ASU President Mahfouth Joudeh said that the three-day event constitutes a communication platform for participants in various cultural subjects related to the “human message” of typography.

Issam Abu Awad, head of the conference, said that the gathering will be discussing subjects that can serve design and its artistic, cultural and humanitarian messages.
