Q1 2023 sees 80.9% increase in overnight tourists

AMMAN — The Kingdom is experiencing an unprecedented surge in tourism, with 1,476,599 visitors entering Jordan during the first quarter of this year, an increase of 90.7 per cent compared with the same period last year, which saw 774,111 tourists.

The monthly bulletin issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on Wednesday showed that overnight tourists increased by 80.9 per cent during the first quarter of this year. This quarter, 1,204,458 overnight tourists stayed in the Kingdom, compared with about 665,779 tourists during the same period in 2022.

In the first quarter of 2019, which is considered the golden year of tourism in Jordan, 1,146,790 visitors travelled to Jordan, including 966,483 overnight tourists, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The bulletin indicated a 163.9 per cent rise in the number of European visitors during the first quarter of this year, totalling 198,766 tourists, compared with the same period in 2022. 

The number of visitors from Asia and the Pacific also increased by 286.4 per cent, reaching 79,232 tourists, while the number of visitors from the Americas grew by 159.9 per cent, to reach 58,880 tourists.

Meanwhile, the number of tourists from Arab countries increased by 61.7 per cent in the first quarter of this year. 

The number of visitors from African countries increased by 128.4 per cent, while the number of Jordanians residing abroad who visited the country increased by 53.1 per cent.

In March alone, 536,642 tourists visited the Kingdom, an increase of 43.1 per cent compared with March of 2022, when Jordan saw 375,017 visitors. The number of overnight tourists also increased by 38.5 per cent compared with March 2022.
