AMMAN — EuroMed Feminist Initiative held a roundtable discussion on promoting a women-friendly work environment on Thursday in Amman.
The roundtable provided a platform for dialogue between the private sector, civil society and governmental stakeholders on improving women’s economic participation and access to the labour market, according to a statement by the organisers.
It was conducted within the framework of the Madad for Women programme funded by the EU through its Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, the EU “MADAD Fund”, the statement said.
The discussion shed light on the importance of ensuring a workplace environment that is free of harassment and discrimination against women and touched on current conditions and services to facilitate women´s economic participation, such as day-care centres.
The roundtable also served as an opportunity for the exchange of best practices and lessons learned.
During the opening of the discussion, EU-Madad Country Manager in Jordan Insaf Daas reviewed the objectives of the roundtable and the achievements of the programme so far, according to the statement.
Ghaleb Hijazi, vice president of the Business Development Centre, highlighted the need to build strong relationships with the private sector, while a representative from Tamkeen legal aid organisation underscored the importance of extending legal protection for working women.
During the discussion, several private companies presented ideas on making human-resources manuals and day-care establishments more responsive to the needs of women.
EuroMed Feminist Initiative is a policy network that encompasses women’s rights organisations from the two shores of the Mediterranean.
It provides expertise in the area of gender equality and women’s rights as inseparable from democracy and citizenship and advocates for political solutions to all conflicts and for people’s right to self-determination, the statement read.
