AMMAN — The world annually celebrates World Wetlands Day (WWD) on February 2, where this date marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971 with the aim to protect wetlands and their resources and services to humanity.
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature joins the world in celebrating the occasion out of its belief in the importance of wetlands in preserving life on earth, according to an RSCN statement.
Jordan enjoys several wetlands that have special importance, such as Fifa Nature Reserve and Azraq Wetland Reserve, the RSCN said.
Azraq Wetland Reserve Director Hazem Harisheh said that, to date, the amount of water that has reached the reserve’s basin is limited, adding that upon flooding the basin is considered an attraction point for migrating birds between Europe and Africa, which is necessary for spotting and registering various kinds of birds.
