AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Saturday reiterated Jordan's support to brotherly Palestinians' legitimate rights — paramount of which is their right to an independent state of their own.

Safadi's remarks came during a meeting with Secretary of the Central Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Saeb Erekat, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The foreign minister and the Palestinian official discussed the latest developments to the Palestinian issue following the announcement of the US' proposal to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict which was rejected by the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

During the meeting, Safadi reaffirmed that any solution to the long-running Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be on the basis of the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative that can lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to the statement.

For his part, Erekat voiced appreciation for Jordan’s support to Palestinians, stressing the importance of the Hashemite custodianship in protecting Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, and preserving the old city’s Arab identity.
