AMMAN — The Senate’s Legal Committee on Sunday approved the draft law amending the Execution Law as referred to by the Lower House, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Members of the committee also approved the majority of the articles of the amended draft of the Penal Code, in a meeting chaired by Senate President Faisal Fayez.
The committee postponed endorsing the Penalty Code to Monday until an appropriate formula is agreed upon to amend Article 339 of the law, which punishes attempted suicide, in addition to ensuring the availability of credit alternatives when penal protection for cheques is lifted after three years.
After three years of entering into force, the two draft laws would stop the criminalisation of issuing a cheque without balance (bad cheques) and prevent the imprisonment of the debtor who is unable to fulfil a contractual obligation if the amount awarded is less than JD5,000.
Justice Minister Ahmad Ziadat said that a governmental committee will be formed to determine the procedures and legislative amendments for the credit information law, in preparation for lifting the penal protection on cheques after three years.
The meeting was attended by First Deputy Chairman of the Committee Rajai Muasher and Minister of State for Legal Affairs Wafa Bani Mustafa.
