AMMAN — The Sisterhood Is Global Institute (SIGI) on Monday said that the absence of a minimum age limit for engagement increases the number of early marriage and divorce cases, a statement from SIGI said.
According to SIGI, 21 per cent of divorced males and 51 per cent of divorced females were under the age of 25 in 2016. In the same year, 6,637 early divorces (after less than one year of marriage) were recorded, the statement said. The institute called for setting a minimum age limit for engagement to reduce early divorces and its consequences on society, especially when the marriagesinvolve having children.
