‘Surplus of local, imported meat available during Ramadan’

AMMAN — There is a “surplus” of meat available during the holy month of Ramadan, with around 450,000 local and 220,000 imported head of sheep, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Agriculture Ministry Spokesperson Nimer Haddadin told Petra on Wednesday that frozen meats, as well as local and imported veal, are also available in surplus, which is “positively” reflected in prices. 

Citing a number of traders and butchers, Haddadin said that consumption of red meat increased by 50 per cent during the first week of Ramadan, compared to other months, adding that the price of a kilogramme of local sheep meat ranges between JD9 and JD11, while veal is sold at between JD8 and JD9 for one kilogramme and Romanian sheep meat is sold at between JD4 and JD7 for 1kg. 

Jordan imports meat from Romania, Australia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Dubai, New Zealand, Denmark, Sudan and European countries, Petra reported. 

Most in demand is sheep meat from Romania and Dubai, followed by Australian and Sudanese sheep, while demand for veal goes mostly to Brazilian and Indian meat, Petra added.
