AMMAN — The Audit Bureau has criticised two ministers who use six government cars and another senior official who also uses three vehicles.
The oversight agency said in its 2014 report, recently posted on its website, that the finance minister uses three public cars, in violation of regulations that govern the government fleet.
According to the report, the minister uses a Mercedes Benz, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Corolla.
The bureau also revealed that the ministry’s secretary general uses three cars, a Mercedes Benz, a BMW and a Hyundai.
The fuel consumption of these six cars between June 3, 2013 and December 26, 2013 amounted to 3,968 litres, which is 2,616 litres higher than the allocated quantities for the two officials, the report said.
The Audit Bureau also revealed that the awqaf minister is using three cars and decided to disburse monthly allowances of around JD200 for each driver.
The bureau urged ministers to use only one car in accordance with regulations.
The report also indicated that two government cars, that were supposed to be used by senior officials only, were being used by the driver of the awqaf minister.
According to official figures, the maintenance and fuel bill for the government fleet reached JD39.1 million in 2014.
The number of government vehicles is around 20,000, with 10 to 15 per cent belonging to independent public institutions.
